9 signs it's time for a new mattress
- It's 7 years old or older. Check the law tag; most show a manufacture date.
- It sags or has a dip where you sleep, or lumps you have to work around.
- You wake up stiff or sore and it eases up once you're out of bed.
- You sleep better somewhere else — a hotel, the guest room, the couch.
- The springs are noisy or you can feel a coil.
- You feel every move your partner makes.
- Your allergies are worse at night or first thing in the morning with no other explanation.
- Stains, spots or odors that won't come out.
- It takes you longer to fall asleep, or you wake up more often than you used to.
If you checked two or more, it's worth lying down on a few new ones. It costs nothing to try.
How to shop for one without guessing
- Lie down the way you sleep — side, back or stomach — for a few minutes on each one. Bring your own pillow if you have a favorite.
- Know the feel you want. Firm, plush and pillowtop feel very different. Side sleepers often like a softer top; back and stomach sleepers often like firmer support.
- Think about the base. A new mattress on a tired old box spring or frame won't feel new. Ask about foundations and adjustable bases.
- Measure the room if you're moving up a size. A queen is 60 by 80 inches; a king is 76 by 80.
