A standard sofa runs about 84 to 90 inches wide. In an apartment, a condo, a mobile home or a smaller older house, that's often 6 to 12 inches too much. The good news: an apartment-size sofa (roughly 70 to 81 inches) seats two comfortably, three in a pinch, and still looks like a real sofa, not a loveseat.
Measure these three things first
- The wall. Measure the full width of the wall the sofa will sit on, then subtract anything that has to share it (a side table needs about 20 inches, a doorway swing needs about 36).
- The walkway. Leave at least 30 inches of clear path in front of the sofa, 36 if it's the main route through the room.
- The door. Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway or stairwell on the way in. Most sofas can be stood on end and turned, so the sofa's depth and height matter as much as its width.

Just over the line: 83–85 inches
If you have 85 inches of wall, three best sellers open up: the SimpleJoy Sofa (83 in.), the Aviemore Sofa (85 in.) and the Bolsena Sofa (85 in.). The Bolsena queen sleeper is also 85 inches if the spare room doubles as a guest room.
Two other ways to solve a small room
- A big loveseat instead of a small sofa. Many loveseats are 60 to 70 inches and seat two adults just as well. Browse loveseats.
